And then there were five

The Russian news agency RIA Novosti, [link here should work] citing Honduran TV, reports Israel joining the US, Panama, Peru and Costa Rica pledging recognition of the election as long as it is calm.

Too bad the Honduran military chose today to attack the peaceful development project RED COMAL in Siguatepeque-- I will be waiting breathlessly for Israel to announce their retraction of recognition based on this assault of 50 soldiers on this group.

[Source for the latter report was email from Honduras: now posted on quotha.net and in briefer form on Vos el Soberano. Even better report from Quixote Center.]

I'd been expecting Israel to offer their support. I'm sure they have no love for Zelaya after the slanders he aimed at them. One more example of hos his stupid mouth has caused him problems. Be interesting to see if Honduras gives Israel support next time there is one of those lopsided votes in the UN. I wouldn't count on it, though, given the prominent Palestinian community on Honduras.

Honduras, El Pais en que no pasa nada.

So far, the closest to something that could void the election is the police riot in San Pedro Sula. Voting is said by TeleSur to be very light. I would bet the US takes a deep breath and swallows it whole. And then tomorrow, everyone wakes up and realizes, as the scribe says, that the past isn't past. It isn't even over.

Victor, please cite a source for any comment by President Zelaya about Israel that might meet your definition of "slanders he aimed at them".

I believe what you are referring to is press reporting about comments made in the heat of the moment by a radio broadcaster-- not Zelaya-- and then used by a PR firm to try to drum up opposition to Zelaya in the US.

This kind of confusion, fostered by deliberate media misrepresentation in Honduras and sloppy international reporting, is unfortunately all too common in the pro-coup world. I recognize you have previously said you are not pro-coup; but you need to exercise a good deal more critical skepticism about such reports. You just became a conduit for a golpista talking point.

As for the relationship of Israel to Honduras, despite attempts by the golpista press to portray President Zelaya as mentally unbalanced because he identified Israel as a provider of military training to the forces deployed against the Brazilian embassy, already in the 1980s Israel was a significant state presence supporting specialized security training for the Honduran military*. Honduras is one of the clients of the Israeli security company ISDS. While most of the web-based discussions of this smack of paranoia, conspiracy theories, and thinly-veiled anti-semitism, it is a fact that Israel is a long-established Honduran ally critical to the armed forces there. That may not translate into voting in the UN; but it is something that haunts Honduras, as it does many countries in Latin America.
